That time of the year again

Posted by Sowmya:) on December 25, 2011

So it is that time of the year again when we all start making resolutions for the new year and lists of the old year. We see the same lists rehashed year after year and even the items on the kist are mostly the same. I did not want to do that. So here I am making the to ten list of lists which you will see across the print and electronic media in the next one week –

1. Best and worst actors / actresses (can safely assume vidya balan to top this one)
2. Best and worst movies ( both Ra.One and Dirty picture will figure….don’t ask me on which lists)
3. Best songs ( kolaveri and sadaa haq)
4. Best start-ups (people r yet to come out of the myth that there are only tech start-ups in the country)
5. World changing events ( Osama, Syria, Jobs)
6. Technology / inventions
7. Best or worst restaurants
8. Most downloaded apps
9. Promising / budding personalities for the next year
10.Sports champions
11. Best Sachin Tendulkar performances

What other lists do you read???

Happy New Year 🙂 Cheers!!!

Just saying

Posted by Sowmya:) on September 3, 2010

Well, I was not keeping too well and had an extended vacation at home. During the course of this, I discovered that our soaps and serials (someone do tell me the difference) are getting more and more interesting by the day. I tried to catch up with some of them. But mostly I ended with a dizzy spell! What do these mean really??

Firstly we have the plain old boring ones which immediately reveal what they are about or at least string a few words which make sense together. So we have a sprinkle of relationship based ones (blood and holy others) plus simple ones relating to famous movie stars. …basically something slow dim witted ones like me understand.

Pavitra Rishta

Choti Bahu

Hamari Devarani

Mile Jab Hum Tum

Rakt Sambandh

Sabki Laadli Bebo

Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo

Then we have certain others which are what I can call ‘Ctrl C Ctrl V’ but what I should call ‘inspired’. These are inspired from movie title and song lyrics which I think are done for instant recall or by lazy imaginations. Like these –

Sasuraal Genda Phool

Chand Chupa Badal Mein

Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat

Tere Mere Sapne

Baat Hamari Pakki Hai

Jaane Pehchane Se Ajnabi

Thoda Hai Bas Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai

Bairi Piya

Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam

Laagi Tujse Lagan

Karam Dharam Apna Apna

Bhagya Vidata

Then we have certain others who are truly concerned / obsessed with the basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter. I have attempted to understand the subject of these programmes through their titles. Try me!

Na Aana Is Des Laado

See, we have a housing problem. There are too many hutments and shantys. Please don’t come and increase the population on the streets.

I did also briefly consider that this may have something to do with Thirupati and Lado but maybe I was wrong.

Rang Badalti Odni

Not everyone can afford new clothes in different colours. So we change the colours of our existing ‘odni’ to do the trick. How? Watch Badmaash Company.

Kesariya Balam Aavo Hamare Des

This, I am guessing, was sponsored by the competitors of the one who did Na Aana… The guys say, look at our townships, our beach houses, our villas. Do come (with the kesar of course) …and watch the CWG?*

Who Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki

This, I suspect has something to do with Chennai. In the days gone by, everyone had an independent house and no one lived in apartments. Today, thanks to the IT culture and general population explosion, people are demolishing their houses and collaborating with builders to raise apartments. You think this serial has something to do with that? Girl staying in a big independent house which is then broken into flats….and others talk about her “Woh rehne….

Rehna Hai Teri Palkon Ki Chaaon Mein

Again, no place to stay except in the chaaon of your palkon.

Sarvggun Sampanna

Actually, this one has been wrongly classified here cos I initially thought this has something to do with the ubiquitous paan. My bad!

* I only inserted the reference to CWG to increase the chances of this blog being found on any search engine. Adjust kariyo….

And finally to the truly bizarre….I grant them that they manage to keep the viewer curious as to the storyline and theme as also not get randomly ‘inspired’. But this is getting too much, don’t you think?

Agle janam mohe bitiya hi kijo

This is definitely not making sense to me. Help!

Mera Naam Karegi Roshan

This only requires a Gazette Officer. If you want to change your name to Roshan, go ahead. Why make a weepy track of it?

Yahaan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli

Am guessing the scene to be – Girl sitting in USA in front of a PC, opening Google Earth and pointing out to the guy –Yahaan Main….But how do you run a weekly / daily show out of that?????

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai

Do you think this could be the first serial / soap to have viewer participation?

Agar aapko lagta hai ki yeh rishta ‘pyaar’ hai tho type keejiye A aur bhej dijiye 3458936767 par.

Kyonki Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai

This is bizarre simply because the people behind this must have thought –“Let’s string together the names of one hit program which will ensure instant recall and another decent one with a philosophical bent.” Whoa!

Nanhi Si Kali Meri Laadli

And your point is????? Universal Motherhood program.

Papad Pol Shahbuddin Rathod Ki Duniya

No comments and no references to a certain lovable Mr. Wagle

Mrs & Mr Sharma Allahabadwale

No comments again! What I would like to know are the opinions of other Mr. and Mrs. Sharma who are not from the Big B town???

Gutur Gu

I am now wondering if I wrongly hit Discovery channel while doing research for this blog post

Agnipareeksha- Jeevan ki Ganga

I have the faintest clue what this could mean. They have 2 of the 5 elements. Maybe we would have more like ‘Vayu –Jeevan ki Dharti’ or something ‘Gone with the wind’ types! Your guess is as good as mine.

Well, these are only my guesses about these shows. I have never watched any of them. I know I have not included any shows from Sun and other Tamil channels but that begs another blog post someday.

This post happened in the process of my rigid scientific process of choosing which one to watch. Any suggestions? For your information, I am the type who watches Indian Idol, Big Boss, Comedy Circus and reruns of Friends. So now tell me, which of these shows would you recommend?

Goa and back -in 15 minutes

Posted by Sowmya:) on January 27, 2010

I really really need a vacation. Like, right now! I have soooooo much work at office to do and so many things to take care of at home that I am completely overwhelmed. I need a break.

And the worst thing that can happen to you at such times is that people around you go for a holiday. I so detest such people even when one such is my own sibling. Of the random few GTalks I have had over the past week, all I hear is of people’s vacations. My cousin went to Bali, my brother to Goa and some friend to Andaman and another to Kulu Manali. One friend even went on work to Shimla. Can you beat that? Why? Why does everyone go on a vacation and not me?

So that is why I came up with this ‘practical solution.’ Currently due to various reasons I cannot take a vacation but nothing ever stops me from imagining one. So here I am, sitting in my office with a pile of work on either side and dreaming about my vacation.  Firstly I will have to settle on a place to go to. Actually I would love to go to Pondicherry and have a French breakfast but it is tough to imagine anything else about that vacation since I have never been there before and I am not in a googling mood right now. So for easy dreaming purposes, I am vacationing in Goa.

Goa –the place that God created for the times he got world weary; a place where you can truly know what ‘taking it easy’ means; a place where you are left to yourself and not bothered about; a place which is in no hurry to get somewhere and is not bothered if it does not get anywhere. I have always visited Goa during the off-season and have liked the solitude. December in Goa, I heard is fun but way too crowded and that is totally not my scene for an ideal relaxing vacation.

I would wake up to the sea in the morning and feel the breeze play with my hair. I would take loooooong walks on the shore and sort out my life in my head. I would pick pretty sea shells and put them in my pocket. And I would do all of this at nine in the morning. Then I would go for a leisurely and sumptuous breakfast with a variety to kill for. Some juice, parathas, omelets, scrambled eggs, fruits, toast, rolls and then to finish off, some more juice. Few things cheer me up like a good breakfast does. My ideal vacation is always brunch hopeful. Then I would wander about in the resort or outside it depending on my mood. Well, the first day would be at the resort. I would take fun pictures of Sri and me, explore the surrounding areas, curl up at the poolside with a book, have long meaningless chats with Sri, an afternoon siesta and some television would complete my first day. The second day, I will take hubby dearest around the city / state of Goa since he has not yet been there (shudder!) I’ll cover the famous beaches of Aquada (and the fort too), Colva, Benaulim( not famous but a favorite), St. Francais Church and the Mangesh Temple. I’ll also drag him to a cruise on the Mandovi River and some kaju shopping at Panjim. I’ll also tick off Dona Paula on our tourism checklist.  He could taste some local cuisine and sample the famous fenny (Coconut for me!).  I would also take him on whatever water sports we find including scuba diving, para sailing and water skiing. All of this could happen over two days which would make us very tired. Therefore on our final day in Goa, Sri and I would go for a relaxing, therapeutic massage followed by a lazy afternoon. Our vacation would be full of fun, laughter and happiness. We will kid around, make faces and enjoy poking fun at anything and anyone. We will talk to all of my heart’s content and come back with a blissful smile on our faces.

That is all I ask for.

I was wrong. I thought dreaming up this vacation would make me feel better but it only makes me want to go all the more desperately. To add to it, I have just received word that I would be working this Saturday too. Boo Hoo!

Ticket sponsors please drop a line. I will be eternally grateful and maybe name my car after you.

Birthday baby

Posted by Sowmya:) on October 19, 2008

Can you believe this? It’s been a whole year since I started blogging. Its true that there has not been any significant progress during the course of the year and I have not been as regular and diligent in my posting as I intended to be. I honestly cannot make the statement most bloggers make on their blog birthdays….you know the kind which say “I have grown as a person with this blog and it has helped me in many ways. Blah Blah” I’m not there yet. I am happy my blog survived a year. But I do enjoy posting once in a while and keep making resolutions of being more regular and creative in it. Its a part of me now.

I had started this blog with a post on the proverb ‘well begun is half done’. I dont know how well I started with this blog and how well it is going but it ain’t done yet people!!! I went through quite a few blogging sites till I finally settled down happily with WordPress. Its been a good year and hope to have a better next year. Happy Birthday Blog !!!
