Just saying

Posted by Sowmya on September 3, 2010

Well, I was not keeping too well and had an extended vacation at home. During the course of this, I discovered that our soaps and serials (someone do tell me the difference) are getting more and more interesting by the day. I tried to catch up with some of them. But mostly I ended with a dizzy spell! What do these mean really??

Firstly we have the plain old boring ones which immediately reveal what they are about or at least string a few words which make sense together. So we have a sprinkle of relationship based ones (blood and holy others) plus simple ones relating to famous movie stars. …basically something slow dim witted ones like me understand.

Pavitra Rishta

Choti Bahu

Hamari Devarani

Mile Jab Hum Tum

Rakt Sambandh

Sabki Laadli Bebo

Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo

Then we have certain others which are what I can call ‘Ctrl C Ctrl V’ but what I should call ‘inspired’. These are inspired from movie title and song lyrics which I think are done for instant recall or by lazy imaginations. Like these –

Sasuraal Genda Phool

Chand Chupa Badal Mein

Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat

Tere Mere Sapne

Baat Hamari Pakki Hai

Jaane Pehchane Se Ajnabi

Thoda Hai Bas Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai

Bairi Piya

Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam

Laagi Tujse Lagan

Karam Dharam Apna Apna

Bhagya Vidata

Then we have certain others who are truly concerned / obsessed with the basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter. I have attempted to understand the subject of these programmes through their titles. Try me!

Na Aana Is Des Laado

See, we have a housing problem. There are too many hutments and shantys. Please don’t come and increase the population on the streets.

I did also briefly consider that this may have something to do with Thirupati and Lado but maybe I was wrong.

Rang Badalti Odni

Not everyone can afford new clothes in different colours. So we change the colours of our existing ‘odni’ to do the trick. How? Watch Badmaash Company.

Kesariya Balam Aavo Hamare Des

This, I am guessing, was sponsored by the competitors of the one who did Na Aana… The guys say, look at our townships, our beach houses, our villas. Do come (with the kesar of course) …and watch the CWG?*

Who Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki

This, I suspect has something to do with Chennai. In the days gone by, everyone had an independent house and no one lived in apartments. Today, thanks to the IT culture and general population explosion, people are demolishing their houses and collaborating with builders to raise apartments. You think this serial has something to do with that? Girl staying in a big independent house which is then broken into flats….and others talk about her “Woh rehne….

Rehna Hai Teri Palkon Ki Chaaon Mein

Again, no place to stay except in the chaaon of your palkon.

Sarvggun Sampanna

Actually, this one has been wrongly classified here cos I initially thought this has something to do with the ubiquitous paan. My bad!

* I only inserted the reference to CWG to increase the chances of this blog being found on any search engine. Adjust kariyo….

And finally to the truly bizarre….I grant them that they manage to keep the viewer curious as to the storyline and theme as also not get randomly ‘inspired’. But this is getting too much, don’t you think?

Agle janam mohe bitiya hi kijo

This is definitely not making sense to me. Help!

Mera Naam Karegi Roshan

This only requires a Gazette Officer. If you want to change your name to Roshan, go ahead. Why make a weepy track of it?

Yahaan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli

Am guessing the scene to be – Girl sitting in USA in front of a PC, opening Google Earth and pointing out to the guy –Yahaan Main….But how do you run a weekly / daily show out of that?????

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai

Do you think this could be the first serial / soap to have viewer participation?

Agar aapko lagta hai ki yeh rishta ‘pyaar’ hai tho type keejiye A aur bhej dijiye 3458936767 par.

Kyonki Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai

This is bizarre simply because the people behind this must have thought –“Let’s string together the names of one hit program which will ensure instant recall and another decent one with a philosophical bent.” Whoa!

Nanhi Si Kali Meri Laadli

And your point is????? Universal Motherhood program.

Papad Pol Shahbuddin Rathod Ki Duniya

No comments and no references to a certain lovable Mr. Wagle

Mrs & Mr Sharma Allahabadwale

No comments again! What I would like to know are the opinions of other Mr. and Mrs. Sharma who are not from the Big B town???

Gutur Gu

I am now wondering if I wrongly hit Discovery channel while doing research for this blog post

Agnipareeksha- Jeevan ki Ganga

I have the faintest clue what this could mean. They have 2 of the 5 elements. Maybe we would have more like ‘Vayu –Jeevan ki Dharti’ or something ‘Gone with the wind’ types! Your guess is as good as mine.

Well, these are only my guesses about these shows. I have never watched any of them. I know I have not included any shows from Sun and other Tamil channels but that begs another blog post someday.

This post happened in the process of my rigid scientific process of choosing which one to watch. Any suggestions? For your information, I am the type who watches Indian Idol, Big Boss, Comedy Circus and reruns of Friends. So now tell me, which of these shows would you recommend?

55. Worst movie watching experience in a theater (crowd sucked):
Once we were early for our train back to Mumbai from Goa and had like 5 hours to kill. A movie was the most obvious choice to my movie maniac family. So we went to this really seedy theatre and watched a B-grade flick……one with Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Raveen Tandon & Shilpa Shetty, that one with ‘aila re ladki mast mast’ song…….the crowd was predictably EW

Hmmm 9 months (Hugh Grant) & Border (Sunny Deol, Akshaye Khanna)…..wont believe this but P, (a very close friend then who I lost touch with now) and me were laughing through the movie…..dont ask why…even we dont know 🙂
60. If there was a movie that I can say might have changed my life, it was this one:
Nothing so dramatic……..but for the past 3 days, since I watched Pursuit of happyness, I have started thinking a weeee bit more positively…….Anything is possible people! Just do it

Breaking news of last week

Posted by Sowmya on July 31, 2008

last week I checked out ‘kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi’ after a long time…..

The way I watch the serials is one at a time for a week…this way i know the story since my last viewing (which is atleast 6 months old) and perfectly understand the current developments ……I also watch the special episodes i.e. one with someone dying / getting to know the truth about someone else / rebirth / plastic surgery / etc which are well advertised in newsprint a week before……thus i manage to knowledgably discuss these with colleagues, friends and relatives without having to go through the agony of the title song on a daily basis…Smart eh?

So last week was the week for KSBKBT………one of my favorites actually…Hiten Tejwani is cute na? Thats the principle reason for my watching any program….a good looking dude…irrespective of whether its a movie / serial / reality show / whatever else there is. beauty may be skin deep but thats all I get to see on screen…so, fair enough! Now to last week’s breaking news – regulars would know that the character of Karan was a victim of a gunshot on account of a scuffle between his 2 mothers. So whats the breaking news??

Well, did you realise that actually -Karan got shot, his mothers cried and fought over him, Mandira gives the address of his kid, Karan is hospitalized and comes to ‘hosh’ ……all in…..hold your breath…….ONE EPISODE ! Gah! For a second I thought I was watching the 6 month recap episode. the normal structure of this would be –

Week 1 -Mothers (Tulsi & Mandira) argue….rake up 50 years of history

Week 2 -Tulsi pulls out a gun and takes aim at Mandira….Mandira scared

Week 3 -Karan searches for his mother (Tulsi) & asks all the relatives

Week 4 -He sees them arguing with each other

Week 5 -Tulsi & Mandira have a scuffle and a shot is fired

Week 6 -The bullet travels from the gun towards Karan….hi-funda graphics used 🙂

Week 7 -Karan watches the bullet comin in his direction but does not move even 1mm and he is shot!

Week 8 -2 moms fight…rake up 50 yr history…every1 else runs in shocked…close-up shots of all present individually…

Week 9 -They call for an ambulance, it arrives and Karan is taken to the hospital (fast paced episode, eh?) background score jarring

Week 10 -All Gods are harrased with various versions of ‘Maine aaj tak tum se kuch nahi maanga in past 3 episodes mein…aaj maangthi hoon’ background score jarring

Week 11 -Red light switched off in OT, Doctor comes out, wipes his glasses and looks at all relatives (whose shooting schedules matched) present….Tight close up of each relative and then the doctor, nurse and the Lord, background score jarring

Week 12 -Makes the joyous announcement….karan ko hosh aa gaya. Yipeeeeeeeee

Life is getting very fast paced…….We are living in the jet-age afterall 😉

Celeb Blogs

Posted by Sowmya on July 28, 2008

This is something I do for pure unadultarated entertainment -read Bollywood celeb blogs. I agree that it gives them a direct contact mechanism with their fan base. That is good….there is no fear of ‘misquotes’ and topics which a celeb does not want to address can remain that way. But most blogs I read are so full of themselves….what they do, which movie, how was shooting that day, why their movie is good inspite of contrary reports from the box-office, etc etc. In the midst of all these came one, to put it in Bollywood lingo, different blog. It was from none other than Mr.Karan Johar.

I recently got a chance to read it. I presume he has just begun but all his 4 posts were refreshingly honest or in his own words -a little less dishonest honest. Be it the ‘art of convinient alzheimer’s’ or ‘misunderstood cinema’ or the disease of delusion and even his secret happiness of the flop of Saawariya, Karan Johar has called a spade a spade. Bravo! Nice to know that Bollywood rulers are also human afterall. Take a bow, Mr.Johar. 🙂

But do you really have to signoff as ‘love & koffee’??????????????????

This week in Idiot Land

Posted by Sowmya on July 28, 2008

Am getting set in my new space….it needs some tweeking and turning here and there……Hopefully My Idiot Land will be complete in the next few days to come –
Till then I have to tell you about 2 programs that totally got on my nerves over the weekend. I think its high time the idiot boxes (TV & FM) get better and leave stereotypes behind –
1. Read about this new reality show to be produced by Balaji Telefilms -‘Kaun Jeetega Bollywood ka Ticket’. I am not bugged about such a wierdo name (I am, but that is not the subject of this post). Its some kind of contest with each pair has one celeb and one non-celeb for the 4 zones of the country -East, West, North and …………CENTRAL…well oh well. I am looking up my contact list for my school teacher who taught me about the four directions being east, west, north and SOUTH. Have the guys at TV Land heard of this?? The south….4 lovely states…..with 4 different languages. Breaking news -“Not everyone is a madrasi”. But no! Why was I expecting this? The hindi entertainment industry has constantly ignored the south. I fail to understand why. Before I am accussed of regional politics let me assure you I am a proud, extremely proud Mumbaite….born and brought up there and lived all my life. And have often wondered if geography was taught differently to different parts of India. I remember another program sometime back -Antakshari, me thinks, on Zee. 4 zones -with Central being the fourth. Wierd! Extremely!
The South does have amazing TV options in the regional languages -Mr.Kalanidi Maran’s Sun Network has done amazingly well! But I am just wondering- which is the chicken and which one the egg?? Have these regional channels started due to neglect of the South in mainstream hindi channels. Or is it because these channels have exclusive viewership of the South Indian audience that the Hindi channels ignore them?
Till then I’ll debate over N-E-W-S  v/s  N-E-W-C. Nice to know that this has also crossed the mind of one of India’s leading journalists –Rajdeep Sardesai.
Now for Number 2 -Heard this on a Tamil radio station yesterday morning…….why is the half-sari worn less? (Half-sari, for the uninitiated, is something akin to a ghagra-choli; a cross between a full length skirt and a saree.) Traditionally this was usually worn by teenage girls who were too young for a saree and too old for a pavadai (full length skirt). Thus the name –half-sari.
This was the discussion topic for the day -Why are fewer women wearing the half-sari. Are girls becomin more modern and abandonin it to shift to a salwar kameez? They went on to include geographical divisions between Chennai and the rest of TN. Or a urban-rural divide….blah blah blah. I remember seeing the same topic being discussed on a leading Tamil Channel some 10 years ago…..They actually had video footage of all colleges in Chennai and proved that more girls are wearing salwar kameez and fewer opt for the traditional half-sari. They even interviewed few guys who waxed eloquently on how tradition should be upheld and why they prefer their wives to be one who moved from pavadai to half sari to the sari and not someone who wears salwar kameez or jeans pant (thts the Chennai word for it, guys). All this while neither the reporter (a guy obviously! Which guy would miss an opportunity to stand outside girls’ colleges and just watch!!!) nor the tradition teaching youth gave a damn to the fact that one was in jeans pant and the other in shorts!!!!!! I remember ranting and raving at home as to how such hypocritical programs are aired in a channel that is beamed across countries. And today, ten years later, we have the same topic, the same arguements and the same logic. Have we moved at all in a decade? Being thoroughly disgusted, I did not listen to the entire program. Maybe some wise ol’ soul did put forth views similar to mine. But the question remains -why take up such a topic for discussion in the first place??
I am not against following traditions or wearing a sari for that matter. But why is only the sari a mark of tradition? Why not the dhoti, the kurta ? Why does a girl keep having to prove her beliefs in traditon by wearing a sari? When will the ‘ideal wife’ be brought upto date by all the eligible bachelors? When will an ideal wife change from -‘sari wearing, flowers on hair, bindi sticking, cooking knowing girl’ to ‘smart, independant, self-made, multi-tasking girl who shares her husband’s responsibilities?
A small percentage of guys have attained ‘nirvana’ in this regard but the majority still stand by the sari. The equation remains –
Sari = Good girl; Jeans pant = Easy girl
Pity 😦
