NaBloPoMo – Day 15

Posted by Sowmya on May 15, 2014

How often do you eat a meal from a restaurant? How do you decide when to cook or when to eat out?

It looks like my posts are getting repetitive. It can be either because all the questions are connected or that I, in my over-excitement, exceed the brief and give you all sorts of unnecessary information.
Like I mentioned in my previous posts, I eat out mostly because we have family and friends over and there are too many people to cook for. Or its a lazy Sunday morning and the husband and I look for ample variety with least effort. We probably eat out once in ten days or sometimes once a week. This eating out is usually take out and from our neighbouring Udipi style restaurant where the total bill for our breakfast has never exceeded hundred bucks despite everything that we order.
The actual fine dine type of dining out is rare. We don’t go more than once in four to six months. These outings are usually for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary. Or sometimes we go just for the heck of it because someone we trust and many online reviews talk extremely favorably about a particular restaurant.
Now all this food talk is making me hungry. Lemme go and munch something. Ciao!

NaBloPoMo – Day 14

What makes you eat something unhealthy?

One is laziness, which i detailed in the yesterday’s post. The other reason I eat something unhealthy is when I go out with friends or any special event at home. These are few and far between and hence I don’t think they make much of a difference with regard to my health.
Nowadays I have started trying to reduce the unhealthy portion of my meal by having healthy stuff even when I go out with family or friends. I definitely have a soup and sometimes a salad. This reduces my appetite for the unhealthy stuff like paneer and nan. Though I love both these items, eating them for dinner is not at all healthy. I try to go out for lunch instead of dinner so that the food can be digested and the energy expended on the same day. Such days see a very light dinner or sometimes no dinner just some fruits.
All these help

NaBloPoMo – Day 13

How often do you eat foods that you know are bad for your body?

That’s a tough one. The truthful answer would be ‘often’. ‘Why’ you ask me? Mostly laziness. I find it very hard on somedays to cook lunch just for myself. It is a very boring exercise. So then, sometimes, I do order out or eat stuff that are high on carbs or fat and low on nutrition. Wrong decision! I know that! But on a hot and sultry day, the thought of going to the kitchen and cooking for just me and no one to actually tell me, ‘Its so yummy’, I slip and give up and reach for the phone.
What I do to avoid this scenario is to cook additional quantity during dinner and have it for lunch the next day. That meets with my laziness as well as nutritious criteria. I am trying to do that more and more. Hopefully I should succeed and soon not fall prey to the laziness and eat stuff that are not good for me.
On a nicer note, my dinner today is as healthy as healthy can be. Ok, slight cheating allowed. I had spinach soup, vegetable salad and bread, all of which were made by me. Yummy!!!

NaBloPoMo – Day 12

How do you balance good nutrition and good taste?

The simple answer to this question would be ‘I don’t’. But I am making continuous effort towards finding tasty and healthy recipes. It is hard to incorporate healthy but not tasty food into your lifestyle. You can do it for a brief period of time but it cannot become a lifestyle choice.
I have achieved the low hanging fruits ie. adopted low fat versions of curds and milk, replaced sugar with nothing or honey wherever possible, avoid heavy or high fat food during the second half of the day, reduce rice, etc.
But to actually replace butter, cheese, mayonnaise, coconut is an issue I am trying to deal with.

In this regard, I discovered the low fat version of Baba Ghanoush, the middle eastern dip. It is easy to make and healthy plus tasty. Yippee! My journey towards healthy lifestyle with tasty recipes continues….

NaBloPoMo – Day 11

Another source of mental nourishment is meeting people. This could be either friends or totally new people. Bothe kinds offer very different kinds of fillip to the brain.
When you meet a friend or someone you have known for a long time, there is an existing comfort level with this person. So you can let your guard down and relax to be be yourself. You do not have to constantly worry about being misinterpreted or offending anyone’s sentiments. This naturally relaxes your brain and therefore puts you in a state of treatise calm and peace. You could even discuss issues that are troubling you or be frank about your opinions regarding controversial topics which you probably could not share otherwise.

When you meet new people, you discover different things and learn stuff you probably were previously unaware of. Your brain is alert, aware and gets charged up if you are lucky to meet some interesting people or someone with common hobbies. It can give you a different perspective on stuff you always knew about. It could solve issues that were troubling you. Else, you could get nourished by learning about things you have no iota of knowledge. That could open new avenues for you and probably lead you to new phases in your life.

A good idea for everyone is to speak to as many people as possible. You will find you will learn from each and every person you meet and the entire process will enrich and enliven your life.
